I have created an Ubuntu Server 16.4 x64 virtual machine using the latest WS12PRO and it is OK so far.
But this machine is a command line only system and now I don't know how to install the vmware tools...
I have mounted the tools CD using the button in the WS console that pops up when it detects that the tools are outdated or not present.
Then I have copied the content of the CD to my home dir and expanded the tar.gz file and then started the vmware-install.pl script as per instructions in the WS console.
But now I get a strange message:
The installer has detected an existing installation of open-vm-tools on this
system and will not attempt to remove and replace these user-space
applications. It is recommended to use the open-vm-tools packages provided by
the operating system. If you do not want to use the existing installation of
open-vm-tools and attempt to install VMWare Tools, you must uninstall the
open-vm-tools packages and re-run the installer.
The packages that need to be removed are:
open-vm-tools
The installer will next check if there are any missing kernel drivers. Type yes
if you want to do this, otherwise type no.
I really do not know what this means and what I am supposed to do. I just want the "install tools" messages to go away so I can use the new server, and I wonder why WS12 is insisting on the tools requiring installation when there are tools already running, which the installer seems to think are preferred over the ones from the vmware installer...
Very confused (and not very Linux savvy)....
