Did you ever come up with a fix for this? I'm running into the same issue. I have a T450 running ESXi with no problem, but I can't get it to work on the W540. I thought about installing a different BIOS, but that didn't work for you so I'm not hopeful. I've tried turning on and off features, but that isn't having any effect either.
