vm workstation 10 backup

I currently have a single vm running on vm workstation 10.

Normally I make a backup of the server by powering it down and copying the files to another drive for safe keeping.  Not sure if this is the best practice or any complications this may cause, but recently I have not been able to copy 2 files:

server-000001-s010 and server-000001-s11

I told it to skip them and see how it goes.  Tried to power on the copy and I get an error can not find file Server-000001.vmdk

The original server runs fine and functions like it should.  Do you have any suggestions?

I created a snapshot and that was successful.  But from what I understand this is like a restore point (am I correct?).

Thank you!
