The main reason I ask is because nowhere in the documentation do they make the declaration that the external DB is required. The wording around the external database is "suggested" or "should", but it doesn't say anywhere that you must do this if you want a distributed setup. I agree that it's implied, but I asked the question here because I wanted to be 100% sure.
